Way back in 1990, I started looking into the idea of going to Iceland for a combined walking/caving holiday. It took two years before myself and three friends were ready, but fate was not on my side when I was involved in a bad road accident a month before the trip which left me unable to contemplate such a trip for another 3 years.

1995, however, saw me finally heading to Iceland - and the sub-arctic - for the first time. By now, my interest in caving had started to wane and so the trip was entirely a walking/travel trip. During the three and a half weeks on Iceland, we visited Mývatn and the north east, before heading round Vatnajökul and into the interior.

I now found myself hooked on Iceland and the region in general and, after trips to East Greenland and Spitsbergen in 1997 and 1998 respectively, I was drawn back to Iceland in July 2000 for a tour of the Westfjords, Fjallabak Syðra and Kirkja.

Of all the places I've been to, Iceland still remains unsurpassed for its sheer variety and grandeur of landscapes and continues to fill me with eager anticipation at the prospect of another visit.

I am always particularly impressed by websites that include information about the author and their journey, rather than just a mass of photos. Because of this, I would especially recommend that you take a look at Joel Richard's site, which gives a personal insight into the land, its formation and its people. Enjoy.
